How Much Water Should You Put in a Bong?
Nothing ruins a fat bong rip faster than the wrong water level.
Too little water, and your hits scrape your throat on the way down.
Too much water, you may end up splashing bong water in your mouth. Gross.
So if you're new to bongs or just wondering, “How much water should I put in my bong for a smoother hit?” then you've come to the right place.
Why Water Level Matters in a Bong
Having the appropriate amount of water in your bong is crucial for the best hit.
If you have too little water in your bong, the smoke doesn't get filtered or cooled, resulting in hot, harsh hits that hurt your throat and lungs. This beats the whole logic of using a bong in the first place.
Then again, if you overfill your bong, you'll be working your lungs way harder than you should be, and you also risk getting a nasty splashback of dirty, nasty bong water right in your mouth mid-rip - no thanks! No one wants that!
So, having the right amount of water in your bong, as simple as it sounds, is very crucial for a smooth smoking session!
The Rule of Thumb On Bong Water Level
The simple answer to how much bong water you need is just enough to submerge the bottom of the downstem by about half an inch to an inch.
If your water pipe has a diffused downstem (a downstem with slits in it to aerate the smoke), then you want the water level high enough that every one of those slits is covered. If even a few are sitting above the water, the smoke is going to bypass them, and you will end up with unfiltered smoke. If your downstem is a plain tube with no slits, aim for about half an inch above the bottom opening. This is enough to filter the smoke without causing drag.
Later in this article, I'll walk you through a quick test to make sure your water level is correct, so keep reading.
Here is how to Fill Different types of Bongs
Bongs come in many different sizes and designs, so the way you fill them isn't the same for everyone. Here is how to fill water in different bong types.
Filling a Straight Tube or Beaker Bong
For a traditional straight tube or beaker bong, as mentioned earlier, just pour the water down through the mouthpiece at the top until the slits in the downstem at the bottom are submerged. You can also remove the downstem and add water in through that opening, but this can make it harder to judge the right amount, and you may have to insert and remove the downstem a few times, filling up water between, to get it right. Pouring through the mouthpiece is simpler.
Filling a Percolator Bong
When it comes to percolator bongs or water pipes with several chambers, it can be a little harder to fill them properly. The best way to go about it is to pour water in from the mouthpiece until the water sits about 1 to 1.5 inches above the bottom percolator chamber.
However, sometimes water gets trapped in the upper percolators on the way down. If this happens, you can blow gently through the mouthpiece to push the water into the lower parts of the bong. Lightly tilting the piece can also help the water run down to where it belongs.
Give the water time to settle, and make sure the water covers each percolator opening until they are submerged. If you only cover the lower perc, the upper one is just moving smoke around without actually filtering or cooling it, and you're doubling your trouble for no extra benefit. If you've overfilled, simply tilt the bong and pour some water out through the downstem.
Filling A Recycler Bong
Recyclers look intimidating with all those loops and chambers, but the fill point is still the main chamber where the downstem sits. Pour water in slowly through the mouthpiece, about 1/2 inch above the downstem to start, until you see it begin to cycle through the recycler tubes when you draw on the bong.
The whole point of a recycler is to keep water moving, so you actually need less than you'd think. Overfill it past an inch above the downstem and the secondary chamber floods, which kills the recycling action entirely.
Filling A Gravity Bong
For a bucket style gravity bong, fill the outer container (the bucket) about 3/4 full with water. The inner bottle gets submerged with the mouthpiece sitting above the waterline. You aren't filling the bong for filtration here, you're using the water to create suction as you lift the inner bottle. Overfilling the outer container makes it harder to control the motion and increases the risk of spills. If you've never put one together, here is a quick read on what a gravity bong is.
Filling A Dab Rig
Dab rigs need a lot less water than a flower bong. Concentrated vapor is already lighter and cooler than smoke, so you don't need a deep pool to filter it. Cover the downstem slits by about a quarter inch and stop there. Too much and you'll wash out the flavor of your concentrate.
How to Tell if Your Bong’s Water Level is Correct
If you want to make sure you've got the perfect amount of water, there is a simple test that takes about 10 seconds. A pull test.
Before putting the bowl in place, take a hard drag through the mouthpiece, just like you would on a real hit. You're looking for three signs.
-
You should hear a steady chug or bubbling sound. Not a faint trickle, not a violent gurgle, just a clean rolling bubble.
-
You should feel comfortable resistance on the pull. Smooth, not strained. If your lungs feel like they're working overtime, you've got too much water and should drain some out.
-
And crucially, your lips should stay completely dry. If the water comes up the neck and touches your mouth on a clean test pull, that's a sure sign you've overfilled, and you'll want to pour some out before packing a bowl.
Pro tip: Once you find the sweet spot for your bong's water level, use a marker to mark the fill line for future reference.
Special Consideration for Bongs with an Ice catcher
One last thing to keep in mind is that if you're putting ice in your bong, your water level is going to climb as the ice melts. Smoke is hotter than ice, so the ice melts faster than you'd expect, and a bong that was perfect at the start of a sesh can turn into a splash zone by the third rip. Pull the bowl and check after a few hits.
