How to Grind Weed Without a Grinder: 9 Easy Ways
You’re ready to roll a fat blunt, pack a bowl, or get your bong going, only to realize your grinder is missing. Classic problems, but luckily, no grinder doesn’t mean no sesh.
There are plenty of easy ways to break down your bud with things you already have at home!
The best method is breaking weed apart by hand, but if your flower is sticky, dense, or fresh, that can get messy fast.
Below, we’ll break down how to grind weed without a grinder, including 9 easy alternative methods that can help you get your flower ready to smoke.
Method 1. Use Sharp Scissors and a Shot Glass
Quick and mess-free, this is the most popular alternative to a traditional grinder. All you need is a pair of scissors, a short glass, your nugs, and a clean short glass or any small container.
Place your nugs in the glass, insert the scissor blades, and start slicing until you achieve your desired consistency. High-quality, sharper scissors mean more intact trichomes!
Method 2. Use a Coffee Grinder
A coffee grinder is a common household item, so if you have one, then you have a good substitute for a weed grinder.
Make sure to clean out any coffee residue before you use it to grind your cannabis. Also, we advise you to take caution to avoid overgrinding your precious weed. Pulse it in short bursts of 1-2 seconds to be safe.
Your coffee grinder will smell like weed afterwards, so don’t forget to clean up afterwards.
Method 3. Using a Coin and Pill Bottle
I learnt the coin and pill method back in college, and it is my personal favourite DIY method to grind cannabis. All you need is a small coin bottle and a clean pill bottle.
Place your weed and the coin inside the pill bottle, close the lid, and shake it vigorously for about 30 to 60 seconds. The coin acts like a blunt blade, breaking the bud into an even, workable consistency. Nickels and dimes work better than pennies because they are heavier.
Method 4. Using a Mortar and Pestle
You can also go old school and use a mortar and pestle to grind your weed. But with one catch - Your weed needs to be dry. Fresh sticky weed will clump together and make a mess.
Break the cannabis buds into smaller pieces with your fingers and put them in the mortar. Use the pestle to press and twist in a circular motion. Take your time, moving the herb around and scraping any bits off the sides as needed, and ground weed is ready to roll!
Method 5. Use Stiff Card & Tray
Lay your nugs on a clean flat surface, like a plate or a hardcover book. Break them down as much as you can by hand, then use the edge of a stiff plastic card or an old loyalty card to chop and scrape the pieces against the surface. Keep pressing down on any clumps until everything breaks up, then use the card to gather it into a pile.
Method 6. Use a Kitchen Knife and Cutting Board
As we promised…common household items. Of course, you have a knife and a cutting board in your kitchen. Proceed with this method if you are comfortable using a sharp knife.
Place your bud on a cutting board and chop with a rocking motion like you would mince a garlic clove. Gather the small pieces into a pile and repeat until you have an even grind.
Method 7: Using a Cheese Grater
A cheese grater can handle grinding larger amounts of weed at once. Use the side with the smallest holes if you are using a box grater, and rub the bud over a plate or container to catch everything. Be sure to watch your knuckles as the bud gets smaller to avoid cutting yourself.
Method 8: Use a Blender (with Caution)
For a last resort, if you were desperate, you could use a blender to grind weed. If you go this route, use the pulse setting in very short bursts and check frequently.
Although it is not recommended because blenders are rough on trichomes and it’s also easy to overgrind your weed to dust( A Bummer!), As long as you are careful and understand the risks.
Method 9: Use Your Hands to Break it Down
If you are short of resources, your hands will get the job done. Hold the nug with your dominant hand and roll it between your middle finger, index finger, and thumb. Use your other hand to catch the crumbles. Repeat for any bigger chunks until the nug is broken down.
This method takes longer, and your hands will be sticky by the end… on the positive side, its a moment to reflect on why you need to invest in a grinder.
No Grinder? No Problem!
The grinder-less methods we have discussed show that you can still prepare your cannabis flower with everyday household items.
In any case, grinders weren't even invented until 1905, and people have been smoking weed since around 500 BCE, so there's always a way. Pick whichever alternative method suits you best, enjoy your smoke from the list above, and don’t forget to use a Mouthpeace!
