HOW TO SMOKE WAX - Moose Labs LLC

Are you looking to smoke cannabis wax for the first time? Then you are in for a treat! Many cannabis enthusiasts find that smoking wax offers a potent and flavorful experience.

The most common way to use wax is by dabbing, but you don’t always need a full dab rig to do it. In fact, there are many ways to smoke wax without a dab rig.

If you want to learn about all the methods to smoke dabs and wax, you’re in the right place!

Method 1: Smoking Wax Using a Dab Rig

Dab rig is your primary device to smoke wax the traditional way. And as much as it might seem difficult at first, the approach becomes straightforward once you learn the basics of dabbing.

1. Prepare your Rig and Dab

The first thing to do is to get everything ready: a dab rig (a water pipe for concentrates basically) a quartz banger or a nail, a butane torch, a dab tool, and a carb cap.

Fill the water chamber of the rig just enough to cover the percolators without causing backsplash when you inhale. Test this by pulling air through the mouthpiece with no banger attached. If water hits your mouth, pour some out.

2. Season and Heat the Nail

Evenly heat the banger with your butane torch until it glows red hot. For quartz bangers, heat for 30 to 60 seconds. Titanium nails need 45 to 90 seconds, while ceramic requires 45 to 60 seconds. Apply the flame to the outside bottom where you'll load the concentrate.

3. Cool Down Your Nail

In this step, timing is of the essence. After heating, let quartz cool for 30 to 45 seconds. Titanium needs 20 to 40 seconds, and ceramic 30 to 60 seconds. You should aim for a temperature in the range of 450°F to 550°F. Too hot burns your wax and ruins the taste. Too cool leaves puddles.

4. Vaporize your Wax

Using your dab tool or dabber, place a small amount of wax onto the heated banger. Start with a grain of rice sized dab. Rotate the tool tip to get all the concentrate off.

5. Inhale the Vapor

Immediately cover the banger with your carb cap to trap heat and regulate airflow. Inhale slowly through the mouthpiece as the wax vaporizes.

6. Clean Your Nail

While the banger is still warm, use a cotton swab to clean any residue. Then, if there are any stubborn spots, use an ISO-dipped swab. This prevents the buildup and keeps the flavor fresh.

Method 2: How to Smoke Wax Dabs Without a Rig

No dab rig? No problem. Whether the rig is broken, or you're at a friend's without your equipment - you still have some good wax that needs to be smoked. So what do you do? Here's how to dab without a rig:

Adding Wax to a Bowl or Pipe

This will be the easiest option for a flower smoker. Fill the bowl with the regular amount of buds, and then put a small amount of wax on top or in the middle of the flower bed. The flower acts as a buffer so the wax doesn't drip through immediately.

The pro trick here is to apply flame gently to the side of the bong bowl rather than directly to the wax, letting the heat gradually vaporise the concentrate alongside the flower. Too much direct heat and you'll combust everything at once, burning off a lot of what makes the wax special. Done right, it adds a noticeable potency boost and a richer, more complex flavour to an otherwise standard bowl.

Twaxing: Rolling Wax into Joints or Blunts

Twaxing means adding concentrate to a joint, and there are two approaches. For the inside method, spread ground flower on your rolling paper, add a thin line of wax down the center, cover with more flower, then roll normally. For the outside method, roll your joint first, warm your concentrate until slightly sticky, then apply it in a spiral pattern around the outside. Twaxed joints can contain over 50% total cannabinoids compared to the usual 15%.

Using a Healthstone in Your Pipe or Bong

A healthstone is a small porous insert made from an inert glass-carbon material that fits into a standard bowl or slide of a bong. The pores in the stone allow vapor to pass through while holding the wax in place. You just drop your wax onto the stone, apply heat from a torch or lighter (lighter works fine here since the stone doesn't need to get as hot as a nail), and inhale as you would.

So beyond converting your current bong or pipe into something that can handle concentrates, a healthstone needs almost zero extra equipment. The stone itself is inexpensive, reusable, and simple to clean. The hit quality is closer to a proper dab than most of the other rig-free methods, and the familiar feel of smoking through your regular bong makes the whole thing feel natural pretty fast.

Using a Nectar Collector or Dab Straw

A nectar collector is a type of dab rig that is shaped like a straw, and it's one of the easiest to use. The structure is very basic: a mouthpiece section, a body chamber (which is usually filled with water), and a tip that is made from quartz or titanium.

You heat the tip until it's glowing, and then you actually touch it to your wax in its container while drawing from the mouthpiece.

Vaping wax via a wax Pen

Wax pen is probably the most practical solution for consuming concentrates with no rig. It is a small battery-operated vaporizer with a coil or ceramic chamber designated for wax.
First, place a rice-grain-sized piece of concentrate directly on the cold coil. Then, you assemble the pen, set your temperature, and inhale deeply. Because of their portability and minimal scent, wax pens and similar vape pens are very popular among users.

The Hot Knife Method for Emergency Dabbing

As a last resort, you can smoke wax dabs using the hot knife method. The hot knife method was a popular way to dab in the earlier days of dabbing before all the modern tech we have today.

You heat two metal knives on a stove burner until they're red hot, place a small piece of wax between them, and inhale the resulting vapour through a funnel, a cut bottle, or just cupped hands if you're really out of options. This method requires caution because you can burn yourself easier and the dabs may be hotter and harsher. That’s why we began by saying it is a last resort.

Understanding Cannabis Wax VS Other Cannabis Concentrates

Cannabis wax is a concentrated form of THC that packs an intense high with THC levels ranging between 60% and 90%. Putting that in perspective, an average-sized pinhead of wax has about the same amount of THC as one or two joints.

Wax is among the BHO family of concentrates which also features other extracts like shatter, budder, and crumble. These cannabis products are obtained through similar extraction techniques but their textures and consistencies are different. Shatter looks like glass and breaks easily, while budder has a creamy, butter-like texture. Crumble, as you might guess, has a dry and crumbly consistency.

Wax is different in that it has a sticky waxy opaque look that can be either soft and pliable or more firm depending on the processing. And to state the obvious its called because it resembles earwax.

How is Cannabis Wax Made?

Cannabis wax is made from BHO extraction. Here is the process in a nutshell:

  1. Butane is passed through cannabis plant material and absorbs cannabinoids like THC and CBD, as well as the aromatic terpenes.

  2. After the extraction, the purging process is done using heat and vacuum pressure to evaporate residual solvents that remained in the mixture.

  3. Producers then whip, dry, or adjust temperature and pressure to create different consistencies.

The quality of the final product depends significantly on the starting material used. High-quality buds produce better flavor, potency and overall quality compared to trim or lower-grade material.

Now that you know what marijuana wax is and how it’s made lets get to how to smoke it

Are Wax Dabs Safe & Healthy to Smoke?

Like we mentioned earlier wax concentrates are super potent! As such its easier to overdose and experience adverse effects such as feeling overwhelmed or "greened out."

While it may not be life-threatening, you may experience intense symptoms such as anxiety, dizziness and rapid heart rate if you are a beginner, which can ruin the whole experience for you. To ensure that things remain fun, start with a small dab dose to learn how your body reacts. And if you're feeling anxious, asking a friend who's more experienced to join you can give you some comfort.

Notably, dabbing is smokeless, which in turn could be a healthier alternative to your lungs when compared to smoking. Regular weed smoking through combustion can produce toxic carcinogens, but it should not be forgotten that no smoking method is entirely risk-free.

You can help protect your lungs with weed filters, whether you are dabbing wax or smoking it in a joint or bowl.

Final Thoughts on Smoking Wax

It can be a lot of fun to enjoy cannabis wax, but that is only true when you do so in a responsible way. You can have a wonderful time with cannabis wax and not have any bad experience just by taking it slowly and knowing your limits.
